FAQs

How do I get the creases out?

The quickest, most efficient and effective way to remove creases in fabric is to steam them. Steaming plumps out the fibres of your textiles, giving them new life and making the creases just fall out – at least they do when you use a Propress Steamer’s aluminium nozzle! They are used extensively in the curtain fitting and bridal industry as it would just be impractical to try to iron these items. Propress’ Steamers’ aluminium nozzle means you can safely steam even the most delicate of fabrics.

The item I've hired have turned up terribly creased, what can I do?

If you need a professional garment steamer for a one off event, or a short period of time you might want to consider hiring a fabric steamer. That way you can use the top of the line commercial steamer without having to buy one outright, this is also a really great way to try before you buy! All our hire steamer machines are PRO580 models. They come in a rigid black carrying case (ideal for taking on location) and if you need a longer hose, just ask! For a small increase in the deposit we can supply the hire steamer machine with a drapery kit or a 2m hose if you prefer. We want you to love Propress Steamers and think the hire steamer is an excellent taster of what we can offer, both in terms of product and service, why not contact us for more information?

I've left it until the last minute to order a steamer, can you help?

The short answer is “Yes!”. If are in the UK and you place your order before 3pm Monday – Friday you should receive your steamer the next working day. If you need the steamer delivered on a premium service, say by 12pm or by 9am we can arrange it. Based in the London area and need a steamer even more urgently than that? Well we can help you arrange a courier, so you receive your steamer within a couple of hours. Still not quick enough? Pop in to our South Wimbledon base and pick a machine up there and then. If we’re delivering to an EU country we may need a bit more notice, but if you’re willing to pay for a premium delivery then we can easily get a quote from the couriers for you. We want to make you happy, let us know what you need and we will do our best to make it happen.

Can I buy a fabric steamer as a gift for someone else?

Yes you can. Given how much work we do in the charitable sector it is not surprising we often get asked if someone can buy a garment steamer to donate to a charity shop, or just as a present to make a friend’s life a bit easier. All invoices are sent separately from the clothes steamer, so you don’t have to worry about someone seeing how much you’ve spent, on the delivery note. While we can’t offer a gift wrapping service, we’re quite happy to include any personalised message you may like on the delivery note – just let us know if you need something different at info@propress.co.uk

Do you hire out your professional steamers?

Yes we do. Our hire commercial steamer machines are designed for short term use and are charged on a weekly basis. We do take a deposit, which is refundable upon return of the machine in good order. All our hire Propress Steamer machines are PRO580 models. They come in a rigid black carrying case (ideal for taking on location) and if you need a longer hose, just ask! For a small increase in the deposit we can supply the hire fabric steamer machine with a drapery kit or a 2m hose if you prefer. We want you to love our product and think the hire machine is an excellent taster of what we can offer, both in terms of product and service, why not contact us for more information?

Do you have any Health & Safety advice?

Every steamer goes out with an instruction booklet and an A4 Health and Safety poster that can be displayed in store where the steaming takes place. However we are well aware that not everybody reads instruction booklets. We have found that if a document is co-branded with your company logo, your staff are more likely to pay attention to and retain the information. We have come up with a Health & Safety pack that includes training schedules, risk assessments, basic safety and operating instructions and routine maintenance advice. Just email us with what you need and a jpeg of your logo to info@propress.co.uk and we will be happy to discuss your requirements. Need something a bit more specific, tailored to your individual needs? Let us know, we will do our best to help so that you and all your staff can steam happily and safely.
Instruction booklets and A4 Health and Safety posters are available in a variety of languages.

Where could I see a commercial steamer in action?

Well that depends where you are based. If you are in London or the South East of the UK and have the time, pop into our South Wimbledon office, we would love to see you. Give us a call on 020 8417 0660 to arrange a demonstration and we can have whatever fabric steamer you’re interested in up and running so you can have a play with it. Based further afield? Not to worry, Propress professional steamers are the most reliable and effective garment steamers around, which is why 90% of UK charity shops use Propress steamers. Wander down your High Street and see if the local charity shop will let you have a look. As a thank you to all those charity shops being such excellent ambassadors for Propress steamers, if you buy a steamer after a demonstration in a charity shop (and let us know which one) we will send a £10 donation to the shop concerned.

If you are based in Europe, you might be able to catch us at a European trade show.

What is the steam time of a clothes steamer?

Well this depends on what model of fabric steamer you purchase, and how you use it. The PRO290 Propress Professional Steamer has about 70 minutes of continuous steam, the PRO580 Propress Professional Steamer has about 125 mins of continuous steam. To put this in context, once you are used to steaming, a T-shirt might take 30 seconds to steam, a wedding dress 5 minutes. That’s a lot of steamed clothes! The other factor is how you use it; the PRO580 steamer has a standby feature, this means that if you are interrupted while steaming, you can put the machine on standby and it will keep the water just below steaming temperature until you need to use it again. That 125 minutes could last you all day if you are busy enough! The standby feature means that no steam is wasted – saving you time and money.

What is the anticipated life span of a commercial steamer

Propress steamers are built to last! The stainless steel boiler in each machine comes with a ten year guarantee and it is not unusual to get requests to repair machines that are 20 years old (or older!). Even in a very heavy usage environment (like a charity shop) we would estimate their lifespan to be approximately 10 years. The better you take care of your garment steamer the longer it will last. We recommend regular rinsing out and descaling of the tank and making sure that basic safety rules are followed (e.g. don’t pull the machine around by its cable!) but your fabric steamer should last for years and years. If you do encounter any problems with your garment steamer we are here to help and can offer servicing, replacement parts, or just advice, if that is what’s needed to get you up and steaming clothes or curtains again. We have been making fabric steamers for over 30 years and have hundreds of thousands of happy users, why not join them?

Do you ever have reconditioned models available?

Given the long lifespan of a Propress Steamer, it is a reasonable question. There are commercial steamers out there that outlast the businesses that purchase them. Often clothes or curtain steamers are sold on as part of a shops fixtures and fittings when someone purchases a property. Propress Steamers do occasionally have reconditioned garment steamers available. Our reputation for reliability means that we can only pick the best 2nd hand fabric steamers to recondition – usually these are ex-hire steamer machines, ex-showroom steamer models or steamer machines that have been used infrequently for exhibition or promotional purposes. We do not buy second hand steamers from customers, nor do we offer part exchanges on old machines.
